Where is the Malthouse Theatre and where should I park?

We are situated at 71 Colombo Street, beside the Heathcote River, and over the road from the Christchurch South Library. Parking is available right next door in the Best Start Childcare carpark. Please note, this car park is available during performances only.

How often is there a cushion theatre?

We showcase three productions per year. These are in the April, July and September school holidays and occur on a Saturday and Sunday at 11AM and 1PM.

How long does the production run for?

Most productions are 40-50 minutes long with no interval and as part of the 60 year tradition of Canterbury Children’s Theatre, the audience is able to meet and greet with the cast after the show.

What age group are the shows suitable for?

The age group most suited to our theatre is 1 – 12 years old. Children under 2 are free.

Where can I book?

Bookings can made on our website www.malthouse.co.nz for any show during the year plus we have a special discounted “Season Ticket” for all three.

Can I buy tickets at the door?

If a show is not sold out prior, we do offer door sales. We accept cash and EFTPOS only. We don’t accept credit cards.

Do I need to bring a cushion?

We have a stunning array of colourful cushions for your use however many children have enjoyed the tradition of bringing their own to the show. Please no beanbags though!

What if I can’t sit on the floor?

We have the stunning original Repertory Theatre seats installed for the use of adults and caregivers.

Can I bring food and/or drinks into the theatre?

We normally have a local coffee cart situated at our front door which has a range of beverages and snacks available. All drinks are allowed upstairs in the theatre but hot drinks must have a lid. If bringing your own, please be considerate of others.

Is the Malthouse Theatre wheelchair accessible?

Unfortunately, no. Wheelchairs are able to come into the entrance of the theatre however there is no access, other than stairs, up to the theatre stage where the performances are held.

What if I want to be involved?

Canterbury Children’s Theatre holds auditions for every show about 8 weeks before the performance dates. Details are on www.facebook.com/Canterbury.Childrens.Theatre and www.malthouse.co.nz. We are always keen to foster new talent and would love to hear from any budding script writers / directors / actors / backstage crew etc.
